Jenny Nahu doesn't look for recognition - it comes looking for her and found her in the form of an award for the sport she loves.
There are not too many league games in Rotorua you won't see the stalwart at - either cheering on her beloved Ngongotaha team or making
sure media, officials and anyone else are taken care of.
It was the same for the New Zealand Maori League Tournament at Puketawhero Park during the weekend.
Nahu was on hand ensuring results were being collated and recorded correctly, food was available for all the helpers and, of course, ensuring players' needs were also being taken care of.
She has been a coach, team manager, secretary, treasurer and jersey washer. It's continuous but you never hear a complaint from Nahu.
"We've washed the gear since 1968 and we are still doing it. There are times when it is not great but the good times definitely outweigh the bad."
For her efforts, Nahu was awarded the Female Volunteer Recognition Award at last week's New Zealand Rugby League Awards. It's not the first recognition this tireless worker has received.
Earlier this year she was a finalist for the NRL volunteer of the year. Although she didn't win the award she was treated to a trip to the NRL grand-final and the awards dinner.
"I've never did it for the awards but it's good to be recognised. We [women] have had a big part to play in the game."
Originally from Greymouth, she's backed league most of her life. "I used to go to watch league with my parents. It was a big event for our family."
Nahu said the Maori tournament was an important event for league. "The tournament is huge here in Rotorua - we have a big following for the event. That's why it has probably been held here for the last four years."
It's not only the local level Nahu helps out with - she is the secretary and treasurer for Bay of Plenty Rugby and is constantly looking to help develop the sport within the region.
"It's a fantastic sport. My husband played, my children have played it and my grandchildren are now involved as well. It's a family affair."
