The bouts on tonight's card include Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai and MMA, which is a mix of all disciplines

Anyone who has played rugby against big front rower Jacob Marsters will know how hard he can tackle.

The same can be said by his opponents in the ring.

The former Waikite Rugby Club captain will compete in the feature fight of a mixed martial arts event in Rotorua tonight.

Ten matches are scheduled at Side Pocket Bar from 7pm tonight including the main event between super heavyweights Marsters and Rotorua's Tom Peato.

Marsters will represent his uncle's organisation, Pacific Mixed Martial Arts Rotorua, which will host the event tonight.

"I've been training for the last two and a half months," Marsters said.

"I got into MMA when my uncle opened the gym here in 2011."

He said he had stuck with the sport which was proving quite addictive.

"I like the intensity of training ... and just the camaraderie of training with the other guys and the intensity of getting in the ring and fighting, it is sort of addictive."

The super heavyweight currently weighs in at 138kg but has competed at 160kg in the past.

"I'm confident and happy with where I am at with my fitness," he said.

"My game plan is just go hard, enjoy the fight and do my best."

Marsters has a record of two wins, one loss and one disqualification in three MMA fights and one Muay Thai fight.

The event tonight will include Jiu Jitsu matches, Muay Thai matches and MMA matches, which is a mix of disciplines.

Marsters comes from a judo background and said it would suit him to get his opponent on the ground.

"My grappling and my ground work [would be my strength]. My base is in judo so I enjoy getting on the ground."

The main match is a professional MMA bout and includes prize money. The match will consist of five three-minute rounds if it goes the distance.

A goal for both competitors will be to gain more wins and earn a shot at the New Zealand super heavyweight title in the future.

Pacific Mixed Martial Arts Rotorua will show case 10 of their competitors during the event tonight including talented Muay Thai competitor Ray Karaitiana and American MMA competitor Greg Sanchez.

The other 10 competitors are mainly from different Rotorua clubs or Bay of Plenty clubs.

This will be the second event of its kind organised by Pacific Mixed Martial Arts Rotorua, which opened two years ago on Maisey Pl.

Owner and operator TJ Marsters said it was a good chance for people to come out and support Rotorua competitors.

Pacific Mixed Martial Arts Rotorua spokesperson Gina Marsters said the sport was not just about fighting or brawling, it featured a lot of training and discipline.

She said the organisation had plenty of young athletes who looked up to the older competitors as role models.

"There is a lot of camaraderie and you become very humble and respectful to your opponents."

The weigh in will be held this morning at the Pacific Mixed Martial Arts Rotorua training facility on Maisey Pl.

The ring for tonight's matches will be set up just outside Side Pocket Bar in the concreted car park area.

Tickets are $30 at the door for tonight's event. The event starts at 7pm at Side Pocket Bar on Hinemoa St. Under-18s are welcome as long as they are accompanied by a guardian.
