James said experienced players like Joe Nuku, who returned to the club after playing a season with Pikiao, and Harlem Leaigaga-Angell, a big second rower, were standouts for his side.
"Joe has moved to prop this year, which is a big move for a guy who usually plays centre, and Harlem, he was awesome in that match. They both gave the team good go-forward. Harlem was able to beat the first and second tackle all match and was averaging 20m to 30m a hit-up."
Two other players who stood out for the coach were captain and standoff Johnny Ririnui and centre Te Miri Rangi, who scored a hat-trick of tries at the weekend.
James said Ririnui's kicking game was easily the best in the competition. "He kicked two 40/20s in the match. He's a great leader."
Ngongotaha reserves also sent out a warning with a 46-6 thrashing of Tauhara in the opening round.
James said there was a great vibe at the club and he was confident it would continue to grow, especially in the junior ranks.
"From a club that was struggling last season to the player numbers we have now it's really good to see the club thrive."
They take on archrivals Pacific on Saturday at Puketawhero Park.
In the other matches in the round; Pikiao were upset by Taupo, going down 54-34, while Pacific came out the victors against Forestlands 18-4.
In the reserve grade, Reporoa beat Pacific 18-16, Central narrowly beat Mangakino 38-30 and Taupo were too good for Putaruru winning 36-20.
