Kayaking: Carrington wins 500m gold

Lisa Carrington had another great performance in the WK1 500 in Poland, winning her second 500m gold medal in the past three world cups.

This time it was a battle of youth versus experience - 23-year-old Carrington against 35-year-old Katrin Wagner-Augustin of Germany.

In comparison, it was one Olympic medal versus six.

Certainly the statistics were against Carrington but in this battle she came out on top.

The event at the weekend turned into a two-horse race, when the experienced Wagner-Augustin took the lead during the first half of the race.

Carrington then put the power on, overtaking Wagner-Augustin before opening up a boat-length lead to finish first by 0.9 seconds.

Meanwhile, Ben Fouhy raced in the B final after missing the A final by one place.

He paddled a solid race and powered through at the end to finish third. The young New Zealand crew of Jasper Bats, Darryl Fitzgerald, Jarrod Fitzgerald and Zac Quickenden, in the MK4, finished their first world cup on a solid note with a seventh placing in the A final.

Carrington was due to race in the final of her preferred WK1 200m late last night.
