Just like he anchors the scrum, Ben Castle will be staying strong to the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union for the next two years.
The union announced last night the Steamers' captain had signed up for a further two years.
Castle has been a huge asset to the Bay union since
his arrival in 2003 from Dunedin.
For the last three years he formed a Super Rugby front row with Aleki Lutui and Simms Davison at the Steamers.
Union chief executive Paul Abbot believes the former Junior All Black has plenty more to offer.
"Ben is an exceptional person, team captain and rugby player and we are thrilled to have him lead us forward over the next few years with what is a young and exciting team," he said.
Castle has played 42 matches for the Steamers and with front row partner Simms Davison playing his 50th match tonight against Hawke's Bay, Castle is certain to be the next player to notch 50 games for the union, probably during next season.
With the impending departure of Bernie Upton to Wellington and the early exit of Aleki Lutui to England, the signing of Castle is good news for Bay of Plenty according to elite rugby manager Craig Morris.
"Ben is fantastic to work with and is really focused on taking us forward as a union over the next few years to become a strength and contender in the Air New Zealand Cup," Morris added.
Meanwhile, Tanerau Latimer starts in the No 7 jersey for the Steamers' crucial Air New Zealand Cup pool A repechage encounter at Mt Maunganui.
Both sides are unbeaten and tonight's winner will have a lead on a place in the competition's quarter finals.
Latimer, a Crusaders' Super 14 and New Zealand Maori representative, last started against Auckland and he has spent much of the last part of the season coming on from the bench as an impact player. Regular scavenger Nili Latu is on the bench.
Steamers' coach Andre Bell is also sweating on the availability of wing Anthony Tahana for the must-win game. Tahana has a sore calf muscle and if it is not right he will be replaced by Charles Baxter. Marty Bourke will come on to the bench.
Meanwhile, the Magpies have bolstered their ranks for the match.
Former All Black midfielder Nathan Mauger returns to the Magpies starting side as does former Bay of Plenty representative Jacob Kennedy.
Mauger has recovered from a shoulder injury which ruled him out of last week's win against Manawatu. He replaces former New Zealand Sevens' star and Bay of Plenty representative Justin Wilson at centre in one of two changes coach Brendon Ratcliffe has made to his starting XV for the battle of the two unbeaten Air New Zealand Cup repechage pool A teams.
Kennedy replaces injured Commonwealth Games Sevens' gold medallist Lote Raikabula on Hawke's Bay's left wing.
