The Rotorua Aces women's team are on the hunt for a title this year in the Midlands intercity competition following a good pre-season.

The local club side have reached the final of the Super Nines pre-season tournament to be played today in Tauranga.

If Rotorua defeat Franklin Barbarians (Counties Manukau) in the final it would mark the perfect start to their 2014 campaign.

"It is exciting. Obviously it would be a great start to the season," senior player Parekura Rangitauira said.

She said they were happy with how they were performing in the pre-season competition.

"The Super Nines is a new competition they introduced this year.

"It took us a while to get the hang of it, in terms of the rules, but we are really happy with how we are going."

She joked they were accustomed to playing with only nine players anyway, when they have been short on players in the past.

Rangitauira said they made the final of the proper competition, the Midlands intercity competition, last year and would like to finish near the top again this year, when the competition gets underway on June 7.

"We are always chasing the top spots.

"We made the finals last year and got pipped in the final by [Otumoetai]."

She said they had developed a good rivalry with the Tauranga team over the years.

Rangitauira and her teammates expected a tough match against Counties Manukau today in the final of the pre-season competition.

"We played them last Saturday up in Counties and we managed to come out with a win.

"But they are very strong starters and will come out firing. On the other hand, we tend to finish stronger so it should be a good balance."

The Midlands intercity women's competition includes six teams this year.

The Rotorua Aces are the only Rotorua team in the top competition.

Rangitauira, who usually plays in defence, said they had good numbers this year with some young players coming through.
