A spirited 6-year-old struck gold after being picked as the only Rotorua youngster to interview three All Blacks at an upcoming special public press conference.

Matthew McFadyen was tasked with creating a video explaining how the All Blacks could win the next Rugby World Cup, as part of a competition run by TV show Seven Sharp and Air New Zealand.

Children between the ages of 5 and 16 could enter and one child and one parent from each of Air New Zealand's ports were picked to fly to Christchurch for the people's press conference with the All Blacks.

Matthew's father Craig McFadyen said they decided to create the video on a whim.

"My sister told us about it and we thought it would be a fun school holiday activity, we didn't expect to get anything from it."

Mr McFadyen said Matthew "takes everything in his stride" and did a great job of pulling the video together.

"We were talking about how the All Blacks could win the Rugby World Cup and he turned to me and said 'you should play for them dad' and that's how we came up with the video idea."

He said Matthew was mainly excited to fly to Christchurch and go somewhere new.

"[Matthew] is pretty wrapped up in it all but I think I'm more keen to meet the All Blacks than he is," he laughed.

Matthew said he was excited when he found out he had won.

"It was cool making the video, especially the part where I got to pat the rabbit. When we won, I was excited because I get to go to Christchurch with dad."

He said he already had two questions he planned to ask the All Blacks.
