Eastern Bay of Plenty police are continuing their investigations into the gunpoint robbery at the Kope Shopping Centre in Whakatane around 11am on Wednesday.

A team of detectives and other staff are working on the investigation and are appealing to members of the public who were in the area when the robbery happened to contact the Whakatane Police with any information or sightings of suspicious people or vehicles prior to or around this time.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen said they were particularly interested in any information on the whereabouts or sightings of a white 1999 B4 model Subaru sedan, registration EQQ874, that was in the Kope and wider Whakatane area on Wednesday morning.

"We are very keen to speak to anyone who may know where this vehicle is or has seen this vehicle being driven around Whakatane yesterday. Public information will solve this case and the response so far has been very useful so please contact us if you may have seen something."

The two security guards targeted in the robbery were not physically harmed during the robbery.

"This is never what one expects when they work in the security business but their training and procedures in this case I am sure prevented a more serious outcome," Mr Standen said.

Contact Whakatane police on (07) 308 5255. Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on (0800) 555 111.
