A Rotorua 18-year-old described as an internet troll who assaulted an Australian TV reporter has had his sentencing put off.

Tristan Barker - whose father Michael is a former drummer for Split Enz - appeared in the Rotorua District Court yesterday after pleading guilty to assault.

Barker admitted assaulting
Today Tonight reporter Dave Eccleston in Rotorua in March. The reporter was in New Zealand to interview the teenager about his online activity.

Barker has drawn attention in Australia and New Zealand for his online posts. He has hundreds of thousands of teenage "fans" who read his Facebook and Twitter posts.

His lawyer, Bill Lawson, asked Judge Ian Thomas for the sentencing to be adjourned to enable Barker to finish an anger management course.

Barker was further remanded on bail to reappear on September 9.
