Tamehana Karaitiana-Rangitoheriri, 20, appeared in the High Court at Rotorua on Friday before Justice Kiri Tahana.
His lawyer, Tim Braithwaite, entered guilty pleas on his behalf to charges of assault with intent to injure and possessing an offensive weapon.
Tahana convicted Karaitiana-Rangitoheriri on the two charges and directed a pre-sentence report be prepared.
He was remanded on bail pending sentencing on April 23 in the High Court at Rotorua.
A summary of facts in the case was not yet available as it had not been agreed upon.
Braithwaite said a summary of facts would be filed “within a week or two” or a disputed facts hearing would be sought.
Justice Tahana directed that either an agreed summary should be filed within five working days or confirmation of whether a disputed facts hearing was necessary.
