Tourist plane makes unplanned landing on Green Lake

A Rotorua tourist float plane has made a forbidden landing on Rotokakahi (Green Lake).

The lake is owned by iwi and no fishing, swimming or boating is allowed.

The Volcanic Air Safaris float plane landed on the lake on Friday just after 4.30pm, prompting a member of the public to call police.

A police spokeswoman said no one was injured and the Rescue Co-Ordination Centre of New Zealand took over the emergency services communication.

A spokesman from the centre said they received a call on Friday afternoon from St John Ambulance who had been alerted by police. However, ambulance help was not required.

The Civil Aviation Authority has not been advised of any incident.

The Rotorua Daily Post contacted Volcanic Air Safaris director Phil Barclay but he declined to comment.

Rotokakahi is sacred to Maori and Motutawa Island in the middle of the lake is the burial ground of many Maori ancestors.
