Dead birds and Richie McCaw were two of the big hits with The Daily Post's online readers for 2011.

This year's top story on The Daily Post website was the mystery of hundreds of dead birds which were found on a central city street.

Rotorua resident Glyssa Bosworth was walking down Amohau St in February when she came across the grisly scene. The Rotorua District Council was at a loss to explain the dead birds and Castlecorp staff had to pick up about 300 dead sparrows.

The second biggest story on the website was Richie McCaw having dinner with a mystery woman at Rotorua's Wild Rice Thai Cuisine restaurant during the Rugby World Cup.

McCaw rated another mention on the top 10 with rumours he and Elizabeth Marvelly were an item. However, the Rotorua songstress insisted to The Daily Post they were just friends and she was single.

That story ranked number nine on the list.

Two big events which are not only featured on the story list, but also on the most viewed videos and galleries lists, are the snow in central Rotorua and a huge fire which gutted Rotorua's Stationery Warehouse.
