Three people have been arrested after a drug bust in Tokoroa and Taupo, with police seizing synthetic cannabis, cash, firearms, a Taser, ammunition and a small amount of methamphetamine.

About 20 officers searched three addresses in the area on Monday, targeting the illicit supply of psychoactive substances, more commonly known as synthetic cannabis.

The substances are controlled by the Psychoactive Substances Act 2013.

Three people were arrested and charged as a result of the operation, including a 28-year-old Tokoroa man, charged with possessing a psychoactive substance for supply.

A 35-year-old man, also from Tokoroa, was charged with possessing a psychoactive substance for the purpose of supply, possession of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of a firearm and receiving stolen property. A 28-year-old Tokoroa woman was charged with possessing a psychoactive substance for supply.

Taupo CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Graham Perks said police knew from talking to people in the community that the harm caused by psychoactive substances was a significant concern. He said the harm went beyond the user of the products and impacted their families and friends.

"We talk of Christmas being a time for families and festive cheer, but there is no cheer for families suffering from violence and the unpredictable behaviour that can be caused by synthetic cannabis and other illicit substances, or the deprivation caused by money being spent on these substances," he said. "We want families to feel safe, not only at Christmas but all year round, and we will continue to take positive action against offenders to eradicate the harm."

A Bay of Plenty police spokeswoman said police could not yet determine the street value of the items and drugs seized.
