The most-read story online this week was about a novice angler who landed a 5.2kg trout in Lake Okareka, one of the largest to have been caught in that lake.

Cambridge schoolboy Campbell Ware, 17, landed the fish after a 20-minute pre-dawn fight over last weekend, during the Lake Okareka Fishing Club's annual winter tournament.

The teenager has only been fishing since the start of this year. He said he was "pretty stoked" with the catch, which was being mounted by Rotorua taxidermist Ray Port.

The fish scored Campbell two prizes in the tournament, heaviest adult male and best condition factor.

Both the fishing club and Fish & Game agreed it was probably one of the biggest trout to have been caught in Lake Okareka.

"Lake Okareka definitely isn't known for trophy trout but it just goes to show, if you're in the right place, anything can happen," said Fish & Game officer Mark Sherburn. "You never know when you're going to strike it lucky."

Sadly some people don't fish the right way, also in our top five was our story about two poachers who were caught by Fish & Game and police with 28 trout from a stream known to be a good spawning ground.
