What started as a workplace debate on the best fish and chips in Rotorua has become a 2019 mission for The Hits crew.

The Hits Rotorua presenter Paul Hickey said the mission was to find Rotorua's top shops and must do things.

"There are seven categories we'll be looking into throughout the year including food, attractions and activities. First up is takeaways."

Borrowing a cliche, Hickey said nobody knew Rotorua like the locals so it was fitting to ask the locals their views.

"You can go to Trip Advisor and look things up but what you find there is the opinion of visitors, we want to find out what Rotorua people think and what is important to them."

From now until the end of the year you'll hear Hickey calling for nominations during his daytime show on The Hits and see Rotorua Daily Post stories online and in print.

Rotorua people will be called upon to nominate their favourite shop, attraction or activity in each specific category.

"When our finalists have been found, Rotorua locals will have two weeks to vote as many times as they like for their favourite finalist," Hickey said.

"Once voting closes the winning shop, attraction or activity will be crowned best in their category."
