Don't drive tired this holiday season - take regular breaks.

Two weeks ago while travelling back from Auckland with my family, I observed a motorist who had great difficulty keeping within his own lane.

He repeatedly crossed the centre line, causing oncoming traffic to take evasive action.

We called the police and the driver was stopped. That incident got me thinking about how quickly poor driving can turn into tragedy.

There have been a number of fatal crashes during the past year that were caused by a driver straying to the wrong side of the road due to a moment of inattention.

With the Christmas holiday period upon us, it is timely to give some thought to keeping ourselves safe on the roads.

How many of us have driven for several hours focusing solely on reaching our holiday destination, while the kids are in the back asking "are we there yet?"

The single-minded focus that some have on getting there can be fatal, for a number of reasons.

One is fatigue. Fatigue is often a factor in fatal crashes and is underestimated by drivers as a risk. So plan your trip with an allowance for rests along the way.

Get out of the car, stretch the legs and get some fresh air. Take the time to stop for an ice cream or a coffee. That break to freshen up might be the difference that gets you there safely.

Another fatal mindset is impatience, which can lead to taking silly risks.

Most of us have seen impatient drivers who pull out to pass, taking unnecessary risks and underestimating the time it will take to safely complete the passing manoeuvre.

Or the inconsiderate driver towing a caravan or boat or trailer who seems oblivious to the long line of cars backed up behind them?

Keep an eye on your rear vision mirror and let others pass.

Finally, make sure your vehicle is safe for the trip. Before you leave home make sure your vehicle has a current warrant of fitness and registration, ensure your tyres are inflated to the recommended pressure (including the spare) and you have checked the oil and water.

If towing a trailer, ensure your load is securely fastened, stopping to check after 10 minutes as a load will often move once you have travelled a short distance.

Please be courteous on the roads and safe behind the wheel. Remember it is better to arrive a few minutes late than to not arrive at all.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
