Swim Rotorua kicked off their long-course campaign with a fine showing during their home event at the Rotorua Aquatics Centre.

The event on Saturday attracted swimmers from all over the Bay of Plenty and Hawke's Bay. They enjoyed a carnival atmosphere under blue skies and blazing sunshine.

World championships open water swimmer Kane Radford started the meet in great fashion to dominate the opening event in the men's 400m freestyle.

Showing excellent technique and pacing skills, Kane posted a very respectable 4min 4.7sec.

Kane then had to dash off to Auckland to compete in the prestigious Harbour Crossing open water race, which he won on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Swim Rotorua had three members who each won six events.

Tara Chemis underlined a great 2013 with excellent wins in the girls 14-years age group.

Her best event was the 50m freestyle, where she recorded a time of 30.69sec.

Fellow squad member William Spear continued his good form to pick up a clean set of wins in the boys 14-years age group.

Ten-year-old Milla Theobald was excellent throughout with five best times, including the 400m freestyle and 200m butterfly.

Winning five events were Zoe Sherwood who excelled in the open age group, and Bianca Donelley in the 11-years age group.

Josh Ensor displayed some gritty determination to pull off four wins in the boys 14-years age group, with the best coming in the 100m butterfly.

Ana Nagera picked up three wins in the breaststroke events and a further victory in the 50m backstroke.

Rachel Mead was too strong for her rivals to take three wins in the 200m backstroke and 400m and 800m freestyle.

Twelve-year-old James Baldwin continues to catch the eye with some solid racing to win three events, most notably in the 400m freestyle.

Swim Rotorua was equally impressive in the younger age groups with outstanding victories from nine-year-old Ronan McKenzie in the 50m breaststroke in a time of 57.96sec.

Meanwhile, 10-year-old Molly Sinclair produced a fabulous 50m backstroke to win the event in a time of 44.23sec.

It was a good day out for the whole team at Swim Rotorua.

The younger athletes have really improved recently, which will prove helpful as we switch our focus to race fast at regional and national events.
