One person has been critically injured after a crash on Te Puke Highway near Paengaroa.

A police spokeswoman said the crash happened between a car and a truck about 11am near AFFCO.

A St John spokeswoman said one person had been flown to Waikato Hospital with critical injuries.

A person had initially been trapped in a vehicle.

The road was expected to be closed for some time with diversions in place.

The Serious Crash Unit was investigating.

Motorists were asked to avoid the area.
