If you want to get your kids out into the fresh air, Sport Bay of Plenty is hosting an app-based Amazing Race-style event at the Redwoods.

"This is perfect for families to get out and about during the school holidays. We also had the entire Sport BOP team using the app recently and they loved it, so obviously it has a wide appeal for adults too - particularly if there is a friendly challenge involved," said Laura Weaser, communication adviser for Sport Bay of Plenty.

She said the aim of the activity was to showcase and educate the public about gem sites in the region. These sites are parks, reserves and forests which are stunning natural and recreational attractions.

"The great thing about The Redwoods for this particular challenge is its diversity."

Home to a range of activities including walking, mountain biking, horse riding or orienteering - there is a range of tracks and trails for different abilities.

"The Redwoods is also steeped in history and is home to many native plants and wildlife - all of which enable the goose chase missions to be both fun and educational," she said.

"Virtually on Track's focus is about utilising technology in creative ways, to encourage people to explore our region's beautiful natural attractions.

"We're conscious that nearly everyone has a smartphone and instead of shying away from this technology, our focus is to find innovative ways in which it can co-exist with a healthy active lifestyle. Trust me when I say this is not your typical smartphone app - there's plenty of action involved."
