A Rotorua student who was kicked in the head and dragged along the ground by her hair by a group of girls is angry a video of the attack is making its way around the city.
The 15-year-old student was attacked at Kuirau Park by another teenager. The fight was filmed on
a mobile phone and sent to students at Rotorua schools.
Students say videos of fights are being sent to their phones every week.
During the 90-second fight, three other girls also attacked the student.
The student was kicked and kneed in the head, dragged by her hair and punched in the head. At one point, four girls were attacking her.
People in the background can be heard saying "should I jump in yet?' and "waste her". They also call her names and at the end, clapping sounds are heard.
The video was sent to The Daily Post anonymously by a Rotorua Boys' High School student.
He said videos of fights involving Rotorua students appeared on people's phones "at least twice a week". This video was one of the latest.
The Daily Post tracked down the girl who was beaten up.
The teenager, who didn't want to be identified, told The Daily Post she had been with friends at the end of last year when the group started yelling at her and running towards her. One girl "started swinging" and she fought back.
When she realised more than one person was involved she thought "I know I'm going to end up getting owned [beaten up]".
The student said the other girl had threatened her before the attack because the girl thought she was "hooking up" with her boyfriend, which she said she wasn't.
The victim didn't know the fight was filmed until it was sent to students' phones. She knew it was sent to Western Heights High School students and learned it was sent to Rotorua Boys' High School students about two weeks ago. "I feel angry about it, I really don't want to be known as the girl that gets into fights."
She was also told it was on video sharing website YouTube.
The student said about two fights a week were sent around Rotorua schools. She didn't want police involved with her attack because she wanted to "move on".
Strangers have approached the teen asking if she was the girl on their phones. She said it was scary knowing someone could have the video forever.
Senior Sergeant Brent Crowe of the Rotorua police said anyone who came across "inappropriate or offensive video clips" on the internet should report it to the site on which it appeared.
He said anyone who knew of anyone planning on fighting should contact police on 111.
Former Children's Commissioner Cindy Kiro said last year mobile phones were not only being used to post negative messages but to quickly gather large numbers of students to watch fights. They are also being used to film altercations so victims can potentially be victimised over and over.
