School teams of six battle it out on Day 2 at waka ama national champs in Rotorua

More than 1950 rangatahi in teams from all over Aotearoa navigated hairpin turns in the 500m events ahead of the 250m straight races in Day 2 of the 2019 National Secondary School Waka Ama Championships at Tikitapu (Blue Lake), Rotorua yesterday.

The event began on Tuesday with a pōhiri given by local iwi and mana whenua Tūhourangi.

Yesterday's races were W6 - six person waka race heats, and today the teams progress to semifinals, with finals all scheduled for Friday.

Tonight, as part of the Rotorua Waka Festival, schools also have the opportunity to compete in a kapa haka super 6 competition being held at Te Manawa at 7pm.
