School of the Week: John Paul College 'unique' and 'family-oriented'

Being the only state-integrated high school in Rotorua isn't the only thing that makes John Paul College unique.

Principal Patrick Walsh says the school promotes Catholic values but he's also proud of other things.

"I'm proud of the teachers we have here. They see teaching as a vocation and not just a job," Walsh said.

"I'm proud of our academic achievements ... when I travel to Wellington and Auckland they sometimes think education in smaller centres is inferior.

"I like the big brother, big sister appeal. We're Years 7 to 13 so seniors take junior sports teams and the little ones appreciate it."

Walsh said he liked seeing students mature over the years.

"It's quite a journey."

Walsh said the school was family-oriented despite being one of the larger high schools in the city.

Year 13 student Madeleine Aislabie agreed.

"Coming from a small school it may seem daunting but the community embraces you. It becomes a bit of a community even though it's a large one."

Student Julia Florence said the school had taught her good values and mindset.

"I will miss how easy it is to get into things. There are always people saying join this sport or do this and we'll have to seek out those opportunities [when we leave]."

Walsh said the school was in high demand, with a waiting list and had plans for a new performing arts centre. He hoped work would start on that by the end of the year.

The centre would be created from the school's former hostel and include new areas for dance, music and drama and will be funded by the Catholic diocese and through international school fees.
