Rotorua men show true colours in Speight's survey

Have you ever wondered what really matters to Rotorua men?

It seems Rotorua and Bay of Plenty men are, in general, honest, helpful and thoughtful.

According to a survey, most Rotorua men would help a stranded motorist, help a neighbour build a deck and buy enough beers for themselves and their mates.

The results are from a survey carried out by Speight's which asked men aged between 18-65 across the country what really mattered to them. A total of 504 Kiwi males were surveyed, which included 28 Bay of Plenty men. Rotorua men were represented in the Bay of Plenty statistics.

While they may fall slightly under the national average when it comes to stopping to help a stranded motorist or buying enough beers for their friends - with 85.7 per cent of local men admitting they would help compared with 86.9 per cent nationally and 71.4 per cent would share their beers compared with 74.4 per cent nationally - their helpfulness still measures favourably against the national average.

However, when it comes to rugby, it seems more would prefer to watch the game than hang out with their partners.

According to the survey, 96.4 per cent of those local men questioned said they'd pay the right amount at an honesty box and half would take a last-minute ticket to an All Blacks game over previously organised plans to go to dinner with their partner and her friends - 39.3 per cent said they would keep their plans and 10.7 per cent said they wouldn't go to either.

A total of 67.9 per cent of the local men said they would help their neighbour build a deck, well above the national average of 56.2 per cent.

The survey shows most Bay of Plenty men are helpful and courteous.

If you become stranded in your car, or you need to build a deck, you're likely to get help around the Bay of Plenty.

Anna Gaestro from Speight's said it was good to most Kiwi men had their priorities in order.

"The Speight's survey is a small insight into the Kiwi male psyche, but it's heartening to see that in a world full of choices and short on time, most Kiwi men have their feet firmly on the ground and know what really matters most to them."

The Daily Post asked people on its Facebook page what they thought of the results and while Rotorua residents seemed to agree with the results, rugby didn't receive the same reception with comments such as "I prob wouldn't watch a rugby game, of any level. I'd prob even watch shortland street before I watched rugby".
