It may be familiar for Rotorua locals, but the geothermal uniqueness of a Rotorua golf course has earned it an international reputation as being one of the most amazing golf courses in the world.
A syndicated News Limited travel article in Australia featured the course under the headline "Golf goesextreme on some of the world's most amazing courses".
The article featured a shot of the nine hole thermal course next to the main Arikikapakapa Rotorua Golf Course.
The article said "some [golf courses] will take your breath away while others will leave you a bit hot under the collar".
"No matter where you are in the world, from snow-laden polar landscapes and dangerous dusty battle zones to erupting volcanoes and breathtaking clifftops, there's bound to be a course just waiting for someone with clubs and an adventurous spirit.
"In the hazard a hot spring bubbles beside holes on the Rotorua Golf Club nine hole Thermal Course."
The course is featured alongside a completely snow-covered course in Greenland, a US Army course in Afghanistan, a course in the foothills of active volcano Mt Merapi in Indonesia and the mountains of South Africa's Legend Golf Course.
Arikikapakapa Rotorua Golf Club general manager Don Blackledge said it would be unfair to take any credit as the nine-hole course was handed back to Waiariki Institute of Technology a few years ago after the club's lease expired.

"However, various parts of our 18 hole course is played around and over thermal activity such as lakes, mud pools and craters.
"The thermal activity on our course is unique and is good publicity," he said.
