The Rotorua Daily Post Salvation Army Christmas Appeal wraps up today.

Six weeks ago the call went out for donations of non-perishable food items for the foodbank.

At the time the foodbank shelves at the Salvation Army's Community Ministries House on Haupapa St were almost bare.

An increase in the number of families requiring assistance during the year had put more pressure on the service than normal.

Individuals, businesses and organisations have responded with overwhelming generosity to the appeal and donated hundreds of items, including cans and packets of food, children's toys, and gift vouchers.

When a burglary at a storage hall at the Salvation Army Church on Old Taupo Rd was discovered Rotorua residents dug even deeper into their pantries and pockets to donate more items.

A tally will be added up today of the total amount collected, and a list of donors will appear in the Rotorua Daily Post tomorrow.
