Memorial plaques of New Zealand veterans will be upgraded in the Rotorua Sala St services cemetery.

Work will begin on October 4 and there will be access restrictions while work is under way.

Rotorua RSA president Ron Hope said minor alterations were necessary to ensure information such as names and dates were accurate.

He also urged anyone who had personal mementos on plaques to remove them in the next few days.

"They can be replaced when alterations are completed."

All plaques will be temporarily removed as new concrete berms will replace all existing berms east of the flagpole.

Missing plaques will be replaced, granite plaques will be refurbished, and metal plaques will be replaced with granite.

All memorial plaques will be reinstated when the new berm is installed.

Veterans' Affairs ensures New Zealand honours veterans and their service to the country. The group provides a grant to Rotorua Lakes Council to maintain the services' section of the cemetery.
