Nooroa Manu prefers to stay out of the limelight - which is why he was a little apprehensive about his nomination for the Pride of New Zealand awards.

A teacher at Tokoroa High School, Mr Manu spends countless hours helping students during and after school hours.

Much of his own time, which would normally be spent with family, is spent with students who need the attention and help.

Mr Manu has been nominated in the Community Spirit category for his tireless work with New Zealand youth.

Mr Manu said he was humbled and privileged in the role he had with young people.

"There is no greater work than to be working with our future leaders. There are so many people out there making a difference and I am happy that someone has felt that I should be nominated. "When you have done it as long as I have you don't do it for nominations you do it because it becomes your lifestyle.

"Being recognised as a part of a big group of people making a positive influence on the lives of our young people is gratifying."

Anyone can nominate people they feel are unsung heroes working hard to make a difference within their community. The awards are being held in association with the Rotorua Daily Post, the New Zealand Herald, The Hits radio station and TSB Bank.

The six categories honour bravery and heroism, community spirit, environmental leaders, emergency heroes and fundraisers.
