David Massey's motivation to help people get fit is to help them transform their lives.
The Rotorua police custody officer said he was "blushing" at the news he had been nominated for a Pride of New Zealand award.
Mr Massey was nominated in the Community Spirit category.
The Rotorua GroupChallenge has grown from a handful of mums to more than 200 people. It is a 12-week challenge with a $20 registration and two sessions a week. Most of the money is gifted to the first and second placed registrants with 20 per cent for administration, such as printing handouts. There is a koha bucket at each session, but Mr Massey's nominee said this money was put towards spot prizes.
Mr Massey, who recently ran the Christchurch Marathon, said he was surprised to be nominated.
He said he used the group for his own motivation, particularly when he was running in Christchurch recently.
"David is a very inspiring man. If there is a sporting event on that any member is participating in you can guarantee you will find some of the RGC crew on the sidelines supporting our fellow members," his nominee said.
"We have all built amazing friendships and have networks of like-minded people to exercise with. Myself and the other 199 members of the group have no hesitation in nominating David for this award. He is truly selfless and inspirational."
