Taupo police are urging locals to be vigilant following a spate of thefts in parts of the town.

Police said there had been increased offending recently in the Vaucluse and wider Nukuhau area.

That included a group of youths who were disturbed attempting to break into a house in Vaucluse Dr, letterboxes stolen from Robinson Tce in Rangatira Park, a $4000 Trance mountain bike stolen from the Acacia Bay Camp, boats broken into at the Nukuhau Marina, and four letterboxes stolen in Lakewood Dr.

They are also asking locals living in the Acacia Bay area to be alert.

"Recently there has been increased offending in the Acacia Bay area. [Last] month, a phone was stolen from a resident in Ewing Grove. The resident managed to retrieve her phone prior to Christmas at the Great Lake bus stop from a man described as homeless, with tattoos on his arms. He had a number of bags with him.

"There has also been a theft from a car towards the end of Acacia Bay Rd, a theft from a boat parked in Isobel St and a theft at a home situated in Acacia Bay Rd, near Wakemen Rd."

Taupo police want to hear from anyone who has information that can help to identify anyone involved in the incidents.
