Police are at the scene of a robbery in Kawaha Point in Rotorua

Police are responding to what appears to be a robbery on Kawaha Point Rd.

Police are currently attending to establish what has happened and are talking to potential witnesses.

A reporter at the scene said there were two police cars, a police dog wagon and a detective car were outside the Kawaha Pt Rd Superette.

A woman who was walking in and out of the dairy said the owners inside were "fine" but she said the couldn't talk until after the police had talked with them.

A second CIB car with two more detectives has just arrived.

She said the store was closed and there were police staff inside the store.

A resident in the area who was mowing his lawns at the time said he saw two men walking past him wearing hoodies and sunglasses. One had a backpack.

He said the men walked down Kawaha Point Rd towards the school.

He said they didn't seem in a hurry but were not moving slowly. He said he couldn't clearly see their faces.

Customers arriving at the dairy were shocked to find it closed with a heavy police presence outside.

One man said the business owners were "lovely people" who didn't deserve this.

"Whoever has done this are just a***holes."

A police media spokesperson said the initial call to police came in about 1.50pm.

Police inquiries were ongoing, he said.
