People have the chance to make their own glow poi as part of The Arts Village Matariki Celebrations for 2018.

Local artist and poi maker Lida Harteman will guide people through the process of making their own set of poi, ready to take home.

People will learn how to make a poi using different-coloured material, how to plait a cord from start to finish and how to cover the finished result in UV paint. This will help guide you along the "Colour The Night" pathway on July 12.

The workshop is taking place at the Arts Village this Saturday.

Harteman said her aim was to express Māori culture and bring the community together through the art of poi making.

The workshop is open to anyone.

"Students, tourists, backpackers, locals and families are all welcome to sign up," Harteman said.

"I will be teaching the method of poi making and going through some of the basic poi actions as an option, so there's no pressure in terms of poi skill level, it's just pure, basic fun as Matariki is about bringing the community together."
