A house fire on Pohutukawa Drive in Owhata. Video / Rotorua Chat Line

A large house fire in Rotorua started in a bedroom, Fire and Emergency NZ say.

Fire crews battled the blazing house fire in Ōwhata during the early hours of Saturday morning.

They were called to the fire on Pohutukawa Drive at 12.16am on Saturday. The blaze took two crews about an hour to extinguish and a fire investigator remained at the scene to investigate the cause.

Today, A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson told the Rotorua Daily Post it was an accidental fire that started in the bedroom.

When firefighters arrived at the scene on Saturday, the house was already "well alight", a spokesperson said.

One ambulance was called to the scene and one patient was treated for smoke inhalation.

There were no other injuries.
