Police have named the woman who died after the caravan she was travelling in caught fire.

She was 54-year-old Lydia Kiri, from Opotiki.

Waikato police are continuing to investigate how the caravan caught fire while driving along State Highway 24 near Te Poi.

A 72 year-old man, who was also in the vehicle when the fire began, remains in a serious condition in hospital.

A serious crash investigation is still ongoing into the cause of the incident, however, Inspector Freda Grace, Waikato District Road Policing Manager, is urging all motorists to ensure they are safe when they undertake a journey.

"While it is currently unclear exactly how the fire started, motorists need to ensure not only themselves but their vehicles are fit for the road.

"As we encourage motorists to prepare for their journey by ensuring they are well rested and drive to the conditions, we must also make sure our vehicles are ready for the road by having a current warrant of witness and are safe to use."
