One person has been confirmed to have died following a truck crash which has forced the closure of State Highway 1 near Tokoroa all night.

The crash took place near Galaxy Rd about 3.55pm with a second person taken to Waikato Hospital in a moderate condition.

"Motorists are advised to plan ahead as the detour in place may add approximately twenty minutes onto their journey," police said.

Police advise the road is likely to remain closed all night between Balmoral Drive and Kinleith Rd.

Motorists were asked to avoid the area until the scene was cleared and observe all diversions which may be in place.

A St John spokeswoman said earlier that one patient in a moderate condition was transported to Waikato Hospital by road while another was transported by road in a serious condition.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was also called to the scene.

The fire service was also there.

The crash happened within minutes of a truck rolling further south on State Highway 1 towards Kinleith, the police said.

That driver was not injured but firefighters were cleaning up a huge diesel spill.

Motorists have been asked to avoid the area. A detour around the roadblock was in place via State Highway 32, Whakamaru Rd and State Highway 30, Ongaroto Rd.
