Source: Facebook: Destiny Church. Brian Tamaki of Destiny Church has delivered a rambling sermon where he lays the blame for natural disasters on NZ's high murder rate and acceptance of gay marriage.
Brian Tamaki has defended saying that gays, sinners and murders are responsible for earthquakes, saying he actually meant anybody indulging in illicit sexual behaviour, adultery, child abuse and more.
"It's about adultery, morality, it's about any type of extra-sexual behaviour," Tamaki has told Willie Jackson in an interview on RadioLive. Tamaki has refused to apologise to anyone and said he did plenty of good in the community and should not be judged as a monster.
He blamed the media for not giving him a right of reply, despite turning down the Herald earlier when he was asked to defend the Sunday morning sermon.
Tamaki said since news of his sermon broke he and his family had received death threats and threats to burn down Destiny Church.
He said it was important for people to remember this was God's view, not his.
RadioLive host Ali Mau, a lesbian, apparently took issue with Tamaki in the studio prior to the interview.
The television and radio personality tweeted that she called Tamaki a fool and walked out when he tried to say hello to her.
A Radiolive caller told Tamaki "hate speech is still hate speech" no matter who was saying it.
Tamaki told the caller, Andrew, to attend his church for a week and he would change his mind.
Another caller asked Tamaki if, by his logic, "the dinosaurs had some kind of freaky sex act", that caused their extinction.
And another caller, Paul, who identified as gay, called Tamaki's sermon a joke.
He told Tamaki the self-appointed Bishop had the chance to be a good role model.
"But you're not because you're inciting a conversation of hate in this country."
However Tamaki talked over the top of the caller saying: "I'm not a hate preacher".
He told Paul: "If you have a look at the fruit, that speaks for itself."
A woman caller accused the media of sensationalising Tamaki's sermon while another accused Tamaki of driving "flash cars" and spending money on himself.
Tamaki's response was that people need to "get a life".
