No-fly zone and road closures for Prince Harry and Meghan's Rotorua visit

There will be a no-fly zone and road closures when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex visit Rotorua next week but police remain tight-lipped about the other protective measures that will be in place.

The couple will spend the day in Rotorua next Wednesday, visiting Rainbow Springs Nature Park, the Redwoods Tree Walk, Whakarewarewa Forest, Government Gardens and Ohinemutu.

During the Australian leg of the royal couple's tour, photographers captured sniffer dogs, water police boating around the harbour and snipers on the roof of the Sydney Opera House.

When asked what security would be in place in Rotorua in the lead-up to and on the day of the couple's visit, police told the Rotorua Daily Post it could not discuss specifics.

This included how many police would be working and whether there would be armed officers present.

A spokeswoman said police had extensive experience of policing visits by a wide range of high profile individuals.

"However we do not discuss specific security matters regarding those individuals."

Bay of Plenty police operation support manager Inspector Kevin Taylor said the visit was a significant event for Rotorua and appropriate measures would be taken to ensure the couple and public had an enjoyable time in the city.

Police would be in charge of security for the royal visit, however a statement by Rotorua Lakes Council said the council would help with crowd management.

Road closures around the Government Gardens and Lakefront next Tuesday and Wednesday have also been imposed by the council.

There will be a no-fly zone in place over the city, including Government Gardens, the Redwoods and Ohinemutu. This applies to drones and other aircraft, except scheduled flights, commercial operators and the rescue helicopter.

The council is not closing any parts of the city, other than the road closures, however there may be limited access to some areas.

The Government Gardens walk is the only scheduled stop on the royal couple's Rotorua itinerary that is open to the public. Access to the other venues is by invitation only.

Redwoods Treewalk owner Bruce Thomasen said the royal couple would have private access and use of the walk.

"We will be open during the morning and over lunchtime but then closing to the public in the early afternoon."
