More than 7.8 million viewers tuned in to see the romantic side of Rotorua yesterday as the hit prime-time TV series The Bachelor aired.

Rotorua was chosen as the location for The Bachelor, Juan Pablo Galavis, to have intimate dates at Te Puia and OGO during the show's feature episode on New Zealand.

Gregg Anderson, Tourism New Zealand (TNZ) general manager Americas and Europe, said the show's timing couldn't be better as TNZ worked to continue to leverage the current high awareness of New Zealand following the recent release of the second movie in the Hobbit Trilogy.

Rotorua features in season 18, episode six of the reality show which was filmed in the Central North Island and aired across America on major US network ABC on Monday February 10).

The Tourism New Zealand International Media Programme and Destination Rotorua Marketing worked closely with The Bachelor production team to co-ordinate filming which took place in October last year.

During the episode The Bachelor shares a one-on-one romantic date in the presence of Te Puia's legendary Pohutu Geyser and a fun group date with stunning views of Lake Rotorua at OGO.

Destination Rotorua Marketing general manager Oscar Nathan said it was an incredible opportunity for Rotorua to be seen internationally as a fun and romantic destination.

"America is getting to see our unique geothermal landscapes and world first adventure activities in a whole new light in this episode.

"We're excited to see if the exposure of The Bachelor translates to more visitors from the US - since the show aired, we have seen an increase in US traffic to RotoruaNZ.com which is a positive result."

Te Puia sales and marketing general manager Kiri Atkinson-Crean said their involvement in the show had helped promote Te Puia, and Rotorua, on an international scale.

"Te Whakarewarewa Valley is a special place for all New Zealanders, and it is simply part of our culture and our legacy in the Valley to share that with others. The fact that coverage has been on such a broad scale is a real privilege."

"The mystique of the Valley really came to the fore for the show. As evening falls, it takes on a whole new atmosphere, with the geothermal steam adding yet another element to the mix. It's quite spectacular."

OGO Rotorua founder and inventor Andrew Akers said it was a huge amount of fun to have The Bachelor on-site.

"As the inventors of this unique adventure activity it's great to have international reality TV shows wanting to showcase us as an indication of the fun and crazy things you can do on vacation in New Zealand."

The former professional soccer player Galavis said he had a great time at the OGO.

"The OGO was so much fun, this was one of my favourite dates."

The show was supported by a number of regional tourism organisations including Destination Lake Taupo and Hamilton and Waikato Tourism.

On ABC's hit primetime reality series The Bachelor, one lucky man is offered the chance to find true love.

A single and eligible Bachelor embarks on a romantic journey, getting to know a number of beautiful women, gradually narrowing the field as he continues his search for his soul mate.

At the end of this romantic voyage, if he has found the one, will there be a proposal - and will she say yes?

Hosted by Chris Harrison, The Bachelor is produced by Next Entertainment in association with Warner Horizon Television.

When Juan Pablo Galavis, a former professional soccer player from Venezuela, stepped out of the limo last season to meet Bachelorette Desiree Hartsock, he also stepped into the hearts of female fans across the country, women who were taken with his sincerity, easy-going charm and good looks.

The dashing single dad, very devoted to his young daughter, Camila, was ready to find love.

Despite failing to win Desiree's heart, Juan Pablo became one of the most talked-about men of the season; now, he is back with his own chance to find the love of his life and a wife - as well as a stepmother to his daughter - from among 27 beautiful bachelorettes.
