The Greenlea Rescue Helicopter has airlifted a man to hospital after he was injured on the Tongariro Crossing.
The man, in his early 60s, injured his knee while descending the steep scree slopes beside the red crater today.
With thick passing cloud and high winds in the area, the Taupo-basedhelicopter crew were able to pluck the man from near the summit and take him to Taupo Hospital.
His group had set off a personal locator beacon as a means of pin pointing its location.
