Ali Bruns says caring for her son Angus is a "unique life".

The Rotorua mum, whose 10-year-old son falls in the autism spectrum, is speaking out as part of world autism day today.

"The way I'd describe it is that it's a unique life. There are a lot of wonderful experiences but also some heartbreak."

Mrs Bruns said the support of Autism New Zealand had been amazing and she was grateful for all the organisation had done for the family.

Angus was diagnosed with aspergers when he was 4, along with other medical conditions, including ADHD.

She said the organisation had been vital in helping to work out strategies to cope with his condition, as well as providing support through field workers and parent-to-parent groups.

"They have made such a difference in our world."

She said one of the biggest challenges was making sure Angus got enough support in the education system. She said Lynmore School had been fantastic but believed more could be done to help fund extra support for children on the spectrum. Bullying could also be a problem.

"Angus is delightful. He's a real character and people who spend one-on-one time with him really get to see that."
