Letters to the editor: Speed bumps? Be careful what you wish for

I see speed calming humps have been suggested for Pukehangi Rd, but I suggest a rethink (News, October 12).

We have them on our street (Larcy Rd) and are urging council to remove them because of the unpleasant, often frightening noise, encountered day and night.

The noise from traffic slowing then speeding up is nothing compared to the din of loads bouncing on the back of trucks, utes, trailers etc.

Once woken at night, it is difficult to get back to sleep. At times, we and our neighbours have thought there's been an accident outside.

One of our neighbours has had to move to a back bedroom to try to escape the noise at night.

I say, be careful what you wish for.

In addressing a perceived, potential problem, chances are you will create a real, measurable problem.

Fenton St needs more crossings

Fenton St is one of the main arteries through the town.

On it, we have the theatre, the police station, numerous shops and restaurants, two supermarkets, a car dealer, numerous motels and hotels, and a racecourse - and only one doubtful light-controlled crossing.

I think this is silly.

Many vehicles use the street every day, it is a fast road for many drivers and a hazard for many pedestrians - some elderly and many children.

It very badly needs at least two properly controlled pedestrian crossings; in my view it is only a matter of time before a serious accident happens there.

I have asked the BOP Police for their views but they just say they will support the council's wishes - a bit of fence-sitting, in my opinion.

So come on Rotorua Lakes Council, do something about this very real hazard before it is too late.

How are experts made?

I had no idea that we have so many experts, ologists and professors in this country as have become apparent over the last six months or so.

Now this begs the question "how does one gain the required qualification, to be an acknowledged expert?"

Just thinking.
