It is encouraging to see the Rotorua Lakes Council does take note of resident concerns - in this case installing traffic calming measures on Koutu Rd.

Perhaps of greater concern is the heightened traffic usage on Tarewa Rd which links Pukuatua St with Lake Rd. Since the four-laning of Lake Rd and the installation of traffic lights at its junction with Tarewa Rd traffic usage has swelled. Not only has this become a shortcut for cars but also heavy trucks. Because this road is being used by some as a means to save or make up time a cavalier approach to the speed limit is often evident.

Tarewa Rd is totally unsuited for use by heavy vehicles. The road, which is not wide, is home to two childcare centres, kohanga reo, medical centre, budget accommodation provider, urupa and marae. Tarewa Marae is well used and vehicles line both sides of the road on occasions of hui and restorative justice sessions. Just off the road lies the Aquatic Centre and Parksyde.

Of added concern is the extent to which heavy traffic usage may be causing damage to homes and sections.

Some 15+ years ago a meeting of residents was held to discuss roading and footpath concerns. This gathering was attended by both council staff and councillors. Little happened. The need for action is pressing. Sadly a fatal vehicle incident occurred on Tarewa Rd less than two years ago. Measures need to be taken to lessen the chances of any more avoidable misery.

What NZ needs

Jacinda and Winnie, please would you take a little advice from someone who has been around the clock a couple of times!

We do not need refugees who have dubious skills, very little education, and hardly any will to live and work - we desperately need about 20,000 builders, this includes electricians, plumbers, bricklayers, carpenters etc. The chance of finding these in an island off the coast of Australia is pretty remote.

We need about 5000 doctors and medical staff - likewise lacking on Manus.

Many people voted you into office in the belief that you would open a door and shine a light, bailing out Australia and its self-inflicted wounds will do little to give us hope!

Show leadership, put New Zealand back on its feet and cure some of the ills that John Key inflicted, then we may begin to hope that maybe, just maybe, we got it right!

Two targets that urgently need addressing are housing and the cost of food (GST OFF food). May I suggest that you start with that?
