Pikiao have toppled Pacific during a re-match of last year's grand final.

The top sides in the Bay of Plenty District premier competition went head-to-head in Rotorua on Saturday.

Pikiao exacted some revenge during the match, defeating defending champions Pacific 18-16. It was the first time Pikiao have beaten the Tokoroa outfit since losing the grand final last year.

Despite the miserable weather, both sides put on a good show at Puketawhero Park with plenty of intensity.

Pacific started the better of the two teams but Pikiao came from behind to win the match 18-16.

The result means there is now only two competition points separating the top four sides - Pacific (20), Pikiao (19), Ngongotaha (19), and Taupo (18) - who have pulled away from the rest of the competition.

Pikiao coach Doug Unuwai said that was the closest he had ever seen the top four at this stage of the competition.

"One week you are at the top and another week you can be at the bottom [of the top four]."

He said it would place extra significance on the remaining two rounds of competition before the playoffs.

Unuwai said his team played really well to defeat Pacific in their second match-up of the season.

"It has been a while since we have beaten them. The boys were really over the moon with that," he said. "The boys dug deep and Pacific brought their best game to us, and it was just an intense game.

"Pacific got off to a good start, like they usually do, and it took us time to get settled."

He said the weather made the ball harder to handle but both teams played well, considering the conditions.

Unuwai said their standout player was young hooker Mani Huriwai, who showed no fear taking on the Pacific big men.

In the other premier games, Ngongotaha defeated Central (Rotorua) 50-6 and Taupo defeated Mangakino 40-20.

Bay of Plenty District Rugby League results for Saturday:

Premier: Central 6 Ngongotaha 50, Pikiao 18 Pacific 16, Taupo 40 Mangakino 20.

Reserves: Taupo 32 Pikiao Res 14, Turangi 48 Pikiao Snrs 32, Pacific 20 Reporoa 24.
