A Rotorua family may have become instant millionaires but they are not planning to give up their day jobs just yet.

The winner of the $24.3 million Powerball prize claimed their winnings at the Springfield Superette and Lotto on Sunday afternoon - the same store they bought the ticket from.

The family, who wish to remain anonymous, have said in a statement they had no idea their Lotto ticket was a winner until they called into the shop to check.

The $24,300,822 prize is made up of a Powerball First Division prize worth $23,800,822 and a Lotto First Division prize of $500,000. The prize ranks as the fifth largest Powerball prize in Lotto history and is the seventh Powerball First Division prize to be won in 2015.

One of the winners said he was shocked when his ticket went through the Lotto terminal and was told he was a major prize winner.

"We had no idea our ticket had all six Lotto numbers and the matching Powerball number," he said.

"I called the family home to tell them. My wife and kids were screaming and jumping up and down in the background. It's a real high - we're just delighted to be winners."

The Rotorua family intend to keep their lives as normal as possible following the win and all plan to keep working.

Springfield Superette owner Rajmesh Kumar had told the Rotorua Daily Post they were a "very humble family who deserved the win".

"It's also very humbling for us. People have been coming in and congratulating us. We haven't even won anything but there is that feeling of happiness that someone from a local community has won the money, and everyone is feeling part of it and wishing the new-found winners well.

"It doesn't really matter what walk of life you come from, if you bought a ticket, you're in to win it," Mr Kumar said.
