A farmstay property on the outskirts of Rotorua has won the "Best in Child Friendly" category in the inaugural Bookabach Golden Piwa Awards.

The award went to the Tuck Inn Farmstay at Ngakuru, near Lake Ohakuri.

More than 3000 New Zealanders voted in the awards to reveal the best baches, cribs and holiday homes in the country, just in time for the summer holiday season.

Bookabach chief executive Peter Miles said gold, silver and bronze awards were given out to the country's best baches in six categories: Best in Location, Best in Pet-friendly, Best in Child-friendly, Best in Quirky and Fun, Best in Eco-friendly and Best in Hospitality.

"We've put together these awards to promote and celebrate what makes baches and holiday homes unique and to acknowledge the effort that many bach owners put in to hosting their guests.

"All the winners should be extremely proud of being recognised as being the best in the country by the members of Bookabach.co.nz," Mr Miles said.

Finalists were selected from the 6600 properties on Bookabach.co.nz, with the winners determined through public voting during September.

Tuck Inn Farmstay owners Marcus and Kathryn Tuck said they had been running the farmstay since early 2009 and had a lot of repeat customers.

"I was really chuffed and pleasantly surprised," Mrs Tuck said. "We love having people come out here ... a lot of parents used to know somebody who owned a farm and were able to take their kids out to show them what farm life was all about.

"Many parents want their children to experience what they experienced as kids."

Mr Tuck said customers loved the fact they were staying on a real, working dairy farm where families could see what happened in the countryside from calving to milking.

The couple have a friendly farm dog and keep chickens, pigs and occasionally, piglets.

Another big attraction was the setting, Mr Tuck said.

"And at the end of the day you can stand on the deck, turn off all the house lights and see the night sky," he said.

The Tucks said the view from the farm lookout provides some stunning panoramas and families could also visit their next-door neighbours, the Macartney's, who have sheep, goats, a peacock, rabbit and a puppy.

Other regional winners were Number 10 at Kuratau, Lake Taupo, which got a bronze award for best in family friendly and the Acacia Bay Apartment at Taupo, which won a silver for best in pet-friendly.

The Golden Piwa Awards are named after the Bookabach mascot, a fantail.

Piwa is short for piwakawaka, the Maori name for fantail.
