Ngongotaha are through to the second round of the ASB Chatham Cup after defeating Auckland side Bucklands Beach 5-2.

Ngongotaha visited Bucklands Beach on Saturday in the first round of the nationwide knockout competition, after they cruised through qualifying last month.

The Villagers were up 2-1 at half-time then netted three more goals to win 5-2.

Ngongotaha's Mitch Miller and Luke Barker both scored twice while defender Dave Haua also scored.

Round two of the prestigious competition will be held on the weekend of May 30. The draw is yet to be done for the next round.

Meanwhile, in Christchurch, defending Chatham Cup champions Cashmere Technical were almost knocked out by Western AFC in the first round.

Western were leading 2-1 in second-half injury time but Cashmere equalised to force the game into extra time. Cashmere then added two goals in extra time to win the match 4-2.

In the WaiBOP Premiership, Rotorua United had a disappointing 2-0 loss to Katikati away.

United would have been hopeful of collecting some much-needed competition points from the match, but Dane Stollery struck twice for Katikati, which was enough to determine the result.

League leaders Cambridge notched up another win with a 2-0 victory over Tauranga Boys' College.

- Results on Saturday:

WaiBOP Premiership: Papamoa 3 Tauranga Old Blues 1, Cambridge 2 Tauranga Boys' College 0, Katikati 2 Rotorua United 0.
