A fire at Red Stag's saw mill that took firefighters four hours to put out was "no drama", according to the company's general manager.

The Rotorua Fire Brigade was called to the fire at the mill at 9.30am today.

Station officer Tony Kelly said one of the mill's machines had caught fire.

"It took us four hours to put out. It was quite a technical one because it was difficult to get to."

He said two fire trucks attended the fire and they finished up around 1.30pm. There were no injuries.

Mr Kelly said the mill stayed open but there was a fair bit of damage to the machine.

He said the cause was believed to be a mechanical fault.

Red Stag general manager Tim Rigter said there was "no drama" as the fire wasn't inside the actual mill.

"Everything is up and running and fortunately there was no big fire. It was about 200m from the building.

"We think we have identified the fault and we are going to engineer it out and hopefully it won't happen again," he said.
