Ask Liana Parker who her principal looks more like and she'll tell you honestly - "the tooth fairy".
Along with the rest of Otonga Primary School, the 6-year-old pupil thought her principal Reg Nimmo looked just like the tooth fairy when he dressed up in a green tutu, red shirt and tinsel.
It's not his usual school attire, but he was happy to don the outfit, complete with wings and magic wand, for a good cause. It was all in aid of a fundraiser teacher Leanne Stewart put on for next year's Relay for Life. Staff at the school have a team entered in the 24-hour event at Rotorua's International Stadium in March, which will raise money for the Cancer Society.
To start the Otonga team's fundraising campaign, pupils took a coin to school and voted for the staff member they wanted to be a fairy for the day. Mr Nimmo got the most votes, his box collecting $56 of the $100 raised.
Liana said it was "cute" watching the head of her school act the fool in a fairy costume. "It's pretty funny really, seeing him all dressed up. He looks silly," she said. Silly or not, Mr Nimmo said it was well worth the sniggers from students and staff.
"In for a penny, in for a pound, I say. I think it was bribery. I think it was a set-up," he said. "The junior kids just loved it. They all think I'm the tooth fairy and the older kids have really taken on board what it's all about. They see the value of it."
Interest in the Relay for Life has been high, with tent sites around what will become the event track going fast as teams register.
