A block of Fenton St between Pukuatua and Haupapa Sts is to be temporarily closed to traffic on Friday for the official opening of the new Rotorua Police Station and Bay of Plenty Police Headquarters.

The street closure will apply between 8am and 1pm with detour signage diverting traffic around the rear of the district council Civic Centre building, along Hinemaru St (Government Gardens' side).

Rotorua District Council said the temporary closure was a safety measure as a large number of dignitaries, official guests and general public were expected to attend the official proceedings which will take place on Fenton St in front of the new building.

A police spokesperson said the new police station and regional headquarters will officially be opened by Police Minister Ann Tolley.

The ceremony will include a full pohiri, a march by police personnel, inspection of police staff on parade by Commissioner Mike Bush and Mrs Tolley, and a haka performed by police staff. It is scheduled to start at 10.30am and finish around 12.15pm.

The Rotorua District Council says detour signs will be removed once opening proceedings have finished and as soon as the site can be cleared. It anticipates Fenton St will be open to traffic as usual by 1pm.
