A Rotorua man who stole jewellery from his employer breached the trust of both the store and its customers, a court has heard.
Jesse Carl Aslett Cox, 29, was sentenced in the Rotorua District Court yesterday to 250 hours' community work, six months' community detention and ordered to pay $3416.90
reparation. He previously pleaded guilty to four charges of dishonestly accessing a computer, three of theft and one of dishonestly obtaining a document.
Judge Thomas Ingram said Cox, who worked at Michael Hill Jeweller, had found ways to dishonestly obtain money and jewellery. "It is fair to say that you had broken the trust of not only your employer, but of your customers. They put their trust in you and you breached that trust," he said.
Crown prosecutor Ngaroma Tahana said four people had provided victim impact statements, one the head of human resources at Michael Hill, while the other three were customers. All four said they felt their trust had been breached, she said.
