As a nation we're notoriously fascinated with stories about weather.
Considering we don't tend to get the extremes seen in Europe and the US in recent times - it's perhaps understandable that visitors from those parts think our keen interest in matters meteorological somewhat quaint.
But try telling that to Cantabrians still recovering from last week's flooding. Or farmers whose livelihoods depend on avoiding drought conditions.
We're a small country with great access to outdoor facilities, never too far from the beach, skifield, tracks and trails, and atrocious weather can play real havoc with our plans.
In a region famous for its many great events and activities, many here can be more affected than most.
Cyclone Lusi, due to have touched down in New Zealand overnight, is expected to bring heavy rain and gales up to 120km/h.
At time of writing a severe weather warning was in place for many areas including Rotorua, Bay of Plenty and Taupo. Police are urging locals to keep up to date with MetService reports and Civil Defence advice. Lusi has killed at least three people in Vanuatu, with several others missing.
This is no time for "She'll be right". We've seen the damage high winds and heavy rain can do. No doubt work crews, linesmen, and of course, emergency services will be gearing up for a busy weekend.
To those braving the elements to attend and take part in events, or even just visiting friends and family or shopping this weekend, please take care when out and about.
Listen to and read the official warnings and information and take precautions as advised.
Our readers may be fascinated by weather stories, but no one wants to read about anyone getting hurt out there.
